The Tufts Veterinary Field Service at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for an internship position in large animal ambulatory medicine. Tufts Veterinary Field Service is an eleven-doctor practice located in Woodstock, CT and serves as a primary clinical and teaching unit of Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in North Grafton, MA. Woodstock, CT is in the northeast “Quiet Corner” of Connecticut, offering a rural New England setting with convenient access to Hartford, Providence, and Boston. The bovine portion of the practice focuses on dairy production medicine and provides primary care for both beef and dairy cattle on farms ranging from small herds to operations with more than 3,000 cattle. The equine services focus on preventative medicine, lameness, internal medicine, field surgery and theriogenology. The practice has also a sizable and growing case load in small ruminants, camelids, and pigs, providing broad clinical exposure and helping prepare the intern to become a well-rounded large animal ambulatory practitioner.
The internship program provides a new or recent graduate with mentorship and a diverse practice environment designed to support the development of a proficient and confident large animal ambulatory clinician. Tufts Veterinary Field Service is well equipped and supported by dedicated technical and administrative staff. The intern will receive hands-on training and experience in bovine, small ruminant, and equine field surgeries; portable digital radiography and ultrasound; endoscopy, including 1- and 3-meter scopes; power dental floating; lameness evaluation using a lameness locator; and in-house blood chemistry analysis. For interested candidates, opportunities may also be available for advanced training in transrectal ultrasonography, DairyComp305 record analysis, advanced reproductive techniques in cattle, small ruminants and horses, and on-farm investigation of herd-level health and production issues.
Requirements
The intern will share on-call responsibilities after a dedicated training period, with a back-up clinician available throughout the internship. The intern will also participate in the clinical and laboratory training of veterinary students throughout the academic year. Attendance and presentation in weekly didactic rounds with the Tufts Veterinary Field Service is required. Applicants must hold a DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school or have current licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the United States. The candidate should be eligible to obtain licensure in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island and must obtain USDA Category II accreditation for those states as soon as possible. Interns are expected to reside within 25 minutes of the clinic. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, a strong work ethic and a clear interest in large animal ambulatory practice.
This is a one-year position beginning June 30, 2027, and ending June 30, 2028. Applications are due October 2, 2026, and applicant interviews will be held in the weeks of October 19 and October 26, 2026. Final selection notifications will be sent no later than November 20, 2026.
