Description
Ambulatory Equine Field Service Internship Opportunity
We are looking for an enthusiastic, newly graduated veterinarian to join our Equine Field Service team for a 1-year internship from June 22, 2026, to June 30, 2027.
The internship program is an educational experience designed to improve clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic skills in an ambulatory equine practice setting with the benefit of an associated teaching hospital. Our team consists of 3 full-time senior equine clinicians and an ABVP (Equine Practice) resident. Our internship is known for excellent mentorship, support, and supervision throughout the entire year allowing the intern to develop a competent skill set, profound knowledge, and confidence to be able to practice equine ambulatory medicine with a high standard.
Clinical training will include the management of clinical cases and assumption of client and patient responsibilities. There is an expectation of the intern to participate in after-hours emergency calls 10 days per month. A clinical supplement is provided based on the volume of after-hours calls.
The equine ambulatory practice at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine serves the horse industry in and around the city of Saskatoon. Equine ambulatory farm calls average over 2,500 per year and have been increasing over the last few years. Caseload is typical of equine practices in Western Canada, is quite diverse, and includes many breeds and disciplines. The practice is well equipped, with portable digital radiography, ultrasonography, endoscopy, and advanced dental equipment.
Most of the time is spent on the equine ambulatory service. There is one month available for rotations in other services that which may include large animal surgery, large animal medicine, theriogenology, diagnostic imaging, and anesthesia. Attendance at appropriate graduate courses which cover clinical cases, advanced equine medicine, surgery, and theriogenology is encouraged with no additional fees. Interns will be involved in teaching final year DVM students on their clinical rotations and gain experience in clinical teaching once they are comfortable with the material. In addition, there are rounds for undergraduate students in field service, and a journal club for equine practice residents in which the intern will be expected to participate.
The intern will be a member of the Equine Field Service group within the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences of the WCVM. This program is a certificate program and, therefore, enrolment as a graduate student in the College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies at the University of Saskatchewan is required. The intern will be eligible for a bursary to cover the tuition for this program and license fees will be reimbursed.
The program includes participation in clinical practice as well as in a biannual department seminar where the intern may present a case.
Acceptance to the internship program requires the following:
- successful English proficiency scores from a recognized program (TOEFL, CELPIP),
- Saskatchewan Driver’s license or equivalent,
- accreditation with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which can be achieved during the internship.
