The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis, is offering an internship program in Equine Field Service. This internship program provides one year of advanced clinical training in equine practice. This one-year program is available to individuals who have completed a DVM or an equivalent degree. One year of clinical experience is preferred but not required. The aim of the program is to provide clinical training in general equine practice. The position is ideal preparation for a candidate interested pursuing in a career in equine general practice or advanced academic training in an equine specialty.
Objectives
Clinical and Teaching Responsibilities
The Equine Field Service Intern provides clinical service to local equine clients and primary care for horses on the UC Davis campus under a combination of direct and indirect supervision by the Equine Field Service faculty. The service officers a high level of primary care and faculty include Dr. Jen Cassano, DVM PhD with expertise in regenerative medicine and immunology, and Dr. Jessica Morgan, DVM PhD who is board certified in Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation with an interest in equine cardiology and poor performance. Emergency duty is shared with other house officers on the service with the intern responsible for approximately 50% of after-hours coverage. In addition to primary care services, UC Davis offers access to a broad range of specialty services including sports medicine and rehabilitation, internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, dentistry, critical care, diagnostic imaging, and reproduction. In addition to providing primary care for patients in field service, the intern will have the opportunity to rotate with specialty services of interest or pursue a clinical research project for approximately 8 weeks/year. The intern will be expected to participate in a specialty journal club and weekly rounds organized based on the intern’s career goals on a case by-case basis. Mentorship of senior veterinary students is expected on the service and includes providing clinical training, developing topic rounds, and assisting with student evaluation. The intern will also participate in teaching of students in the 1st-3rd years of their programs by participating in laboratory sessions and seminars.
Candidates for an internship in Equine Field Service must have a D.V.M. or equivalent degree from an accredited college/school of Veterinary Medicine. Candidates should be available for the 1 year program commencing August 1st 2022.
Candidates should be US citizens, US permanent residents, or foreign nationals eligible for a J1 scholar visa (and at the time of application not be subject to holds, bars or in-country rules) or Canadian/ Mexican citizens eligible for a TN visa. We will NOT pursue other visa categories. Candidates will be expected to pay for their visa fees.
