Westhills Equine Veterinary Services is a six-doctor, equine-exclusive practice located just 10 minutes west of Stony Plain, Alberta. We provide comprehensive care including preventative medicine, dentistry, reproduction, sports medicine, internal medicine, and emergency/critical care.
Our practice began as a strictly ambulatory service and has since grown into a busy hospital-based facility. We offer:
Multiple treatment areas for appointments and diagnostics
A heated indoor arena for year-round lameness exams
24-hour monitored stalls, isolation barn, and covered outdoor pens
Full in-house laboratory capabilities
Our team serves a diverse caseload ranging from backyard companions to elite performance horses, providing interns with broad exposure to equine medicine and the opportunity to discover their professional interests.
Facilities & Equipment
We are well-equipped with:
3 portable digital radiograph systems
6 digital ultrasounds (including 2 repro-dedicated units)
5 power dental floats
NeoVet shockwave
Regenerative therapies (Prostride, PRP, Centrate)
Endoscopy and gastroscopy
Chiropractic and acupuncture services offered by two veterinarians
Our dedicated hospital staff provide 24/7 patient care, while our seasonal internal medicine specialist supports complex case management and offers additional teaching opportunities.
Reproduction Services
Two full-time veterinarians focus exclusively on reproduction during breeding season, performing:
Stallion collection, semen freezing/shipping, and phantom training
Foaling services, dystocia management, and neonatal care
A reproduction-focused internship is available for applicants with special interest in this area.
Internship Program
Our internships emphasize hands-on experience, progressive responsibility, and strong mentorship in a supportive and team-oriented environment.
Schedule & Duties
On-call shared 50% between two interns (2 weekdays/week, 2 weekends/month)
Interns rotate between ambulatory and hospital responsibilities
Initially assist with cases; progress to independently managing daytime emergencies and appointments within 3–4 months
Fully stocked vehicle provided, senior veterinarian always available for support
Hospital technicians assist with case management and treatments
Reproduction interns work closely with repro veterinarians on mare/foal management, recipient herd care, foaling, and neonatal medicine
Note: We do not perform abdominal, orthopedic, or arthroscopic surgeries; these cases are referred to local surgical facilities.

Internship Terms
Length: 6- or 12-month general practice internships (start dates flexible)
Option: 6-month reproduction-focused internship beginning in February

DVM degree (or equivalent) and eligibility for Alberta licensure
Resume and letter of intent
3 letters of recommendation

Externship strongly encouraged, but not required
This program is designed for motivated new graduates seeking to build a solid foundation in equine practice. Our interns graduate with the clinical skills, decision-making ability, and client communication confidence to succeed as equine practitioners.
