Internship Duties: Three interns rotate through medicine (reproduction), surgery/sports medicine, and emergency service on a two-week rotation schedule. This structure allows for comprehensive exposure to health management, surgery, and emergency medicine, while providing the opportunity to work closely with each senior veterinarian. Additional training opportunities are available in dentistry, anesthesia, podiatry, and ophthalmology.
During medicine and surgery rotations, interns work closely with senior clinicians on both referral and primary care cases. Interns assist with case work-ups and are primarily responsible for overseeing the assessment and treatment of hospitalized patients under direct supervision. Responsibilities also include maintaining accurate medical records and ensuring hospital orders are complete and properly executed for assigned cases.
While on the surgery/sports medicine rotation, interns scrub into all surgical procedures and work closely with senior clinicians on lameness examinations and surgical case management. In addition, interns are trained to run anesthesia.
Primary emergency call duty is divided evenly among the three interns. After an initial period of direct supervision, interns begin receiving emergency cases independently, with an on-call senior veterinarian available for phone or in-person consultation as needed. Technical support staff are available to assist with overnight treatments and monitoring of hospitalized patients.
Interns receive five vacation days, with additional time off available for interviews or residency visits as needed. Professional dues, including state licensure and AAEP membership, are covered by the practice. Health insurance is provided. A housing stipend is provided ($1,200/month), and interns are expected to stay on-site (apartment provided) while on primary emergency duty.
Beyond hands-on case involvement, interns take part in topic rounds, stall-side rounds, along with journal clubs and grand rounds. This combination of clinical exposure and structured learning creates a supportive educational atmosphere that blends the pace of a busy private practice with the mentorship and discussion typically found in academic settings.
