Thank you for your interest in the veterinary assistant program for the summer of 2025.
We welcome applications from highly motivated veterinary students with a strong interest in equine surgery, emergency and critical care, and internal medicine. As a summer veterinary assistant, you will report to the Inpatient Team Manager and Clinical Care Team Manager. Our hospital caseload is varied and consists of a combination of medical and surgical emergency patients and elective cases, as well as mares housed for reproductive management. The following positions are available:
All positions require on-call foal sitting duties in ICU
All positions will be required to attend the Monday Morning Doctors Meeting from 6:30am-8:30am each Monday. This meeting includes a lecture on a topic relevant to equine practice as well as case discussions.
Horse Show Intern (1 position) Hours vary
Assist various veterinarians with all appointments and emergencies at the Colorado Horse park during show season. Maintain a professional appearance and attitude as this is a very high client interaction environment. Set up necessary equipment for us in exam area (shockwave, ultrasound, etc.) Clean and properly disinfect exam area and equipment after each use. Upon proper training, ensure that the veterinarian’s truck is fully stocked with medications and equipment needed for that day (x-ray, shockwave, ultrasound, centrifuge etc.) At the end of the day, clean truck, dump garbage, restock supplies, return equipment and properly submit any laboratory samples.
Field Intern (1 position) Hours vary
Assist various veterinarians with all appointments and emergencies. Set up necessary equipment for us in exam area (shockwave, ultrasound, etc.) Clean and properly disinfect exam area and equipment after each use. Upon proper training, ensure that the veterinarian’s truck is fully stocked with medications and equipment needed for that day (x-ray, shockwave, ultrasound, centrifuge etc.) At the end of the day, clean trucks, dump garbage, restock supplies, return equipment and properly submit any laboratory samples. Maintain truck by refueling, washing, vacuuming, and alerting maintenance to any other issues.
Hospital-Internal Medicine/Surgery Intern (1 position) 5 days a week, Mon-Fri starting at 8am
Assist Boarded Internist and Boarded Surgeon, intern DVM’s, surgery technicians, and internal medicine technicians in caring for hospitalized patients as well as assisting in daily scheduled appointments which include but are not limited to, gastroscope, colic exams, neurological exams, emergencies, muscle biopsies, necropsies, lameness, elective surgeries, arthroscopies, emergency colic surgery, castrations, etc. Assist in disinfecting exam rooms, surgery suite, equipment and tools as well as setting up for scheduled procedures and emergencies.
ICU Intern (3 positions) Floating schedule consisting of 40 hours/5 days a week
Assist ICU technicians, primary veterinarians/surgeons and intern DVM’s in caring for all hospitalized patients. Assist with after-hour emergencies. Assist ICU technicians with treatments every 3 hours as well as disinfecting ICU, Isolation and elective barn stalls. Learn tasks and skills from ICU technicians such as medication administration, fluid therapy, pain management, gastric reflux, catheter placement, etc. An ICU technician and intern DVM’s who will oversee you will sign off on a skills checklist for each shift.
Enrollment in veterinary school, veterinary technology school or pre-veterinary students and successful completion of at least 1 year of the veterinary curriculum. Demonstrated interest in equine practice. Horse handling and restraint experience in a veterinary setting. While performing the duties of this job, the veterinary student assistant may have to stand for long periods of time, jog horses in-hand, restrain horses for difficult procedures, and may be required to lift 50-70 lbs.
