Equine Intern- Referral Hospital / Ambulatory
Southwest Equine Hospital is seeking 2 interns to join our busy referral hospital and ambulatory practice in sunny Scottsdale, Arizona for the 2023-2024 internship year.
We have a keen interest in helping train future equine veterinarians, and believe strongly in mentorship and support. After completing the internship program at Southwest Equine our veterinarians have successfully entered residency programs (Internal Medicine, Surgery, Dentistry, Theriogenology, Radiology, Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation) and general practice.
Southwest Equine is heavily focused on internal medicine, emergency medicine and advanced dentistry. We have moderate sport-horse and general practice caseloads. Our surgical caseload primarily consists of colic surgeries, dental/sinus surgeries and field surgeries (castrations, cryptorchids, umbilical hernias). We have a light reproductive caseload, but interns with a reproductive interest are encouraged to spend time with our referring veterinarians that have large reproductive practices. We try to emphasize quality over quantity, and keep to a lighter schedule in order to allow more thorough evaluation of each horse. Initially interns are heavily supervised, but as technical, diagnostic and communication skills grow, we step back and allow interns more freedom to practice veterinary medicine independently (but always with support available if needed). In-hospital and referral cases are always attended by our internists or one of our experienced general practitioners.
Southwest Equine Hospital is a well-established (30+ years) 100% equine practice and fully equipped. The current facility has two spacious exam rooms, large OR with padded recovery stall, in-house laboratory, overhead radiographic system for spine/abdomen/thorax, an 8 stall barn with video ICU monitoring, mare motel, large paddock turnouts and an arena for soundness exams under saddle. A brand new, expanded facility is expected to open in 2023. Ambulatory equipment includes 5 ambulatory vehicles, 2 wireless DR units, 4 portable ultrasounds, shockwave, class 4 laser, regenerative therapies, video endoscopy (1.5 and 3.5m), etc. Advanced imaging (MRI, Nuclear Scintigraphy) is available at nearby equine hospitals, with patients returning to SWEH for treatment and follow-up.
Interns are directly supported by two internists (one ACVIM diplomat, one residency trained) and a board certified dental specialist. Colic surgeries are performed by a board certified surgeon and an equine ophthalmologist is readily available. We typically have 2-3 general practitioners in addition to our specialists.
While interns assist in the care of hospitalized patients, overnight ICU treatments and routine daily patient care are provided by our highly skilled veterinary assistants.
Interns are "off clinics" at least one night per week and one or two weekends per month (seasonally adjusted based upon caseload). Emergency and Anesthesia on-call duty is shared with our general practitioners and specialists. We believe in working hard and providing exceptional patient care, but also not burning out the future veterinarians that the equine industry needs.
Interested individuals- please send CV and cover letter to firstname.lastname@example.org, Attn. Dr. Alexia Ferrante or contact Southwest Equine Hospital at (480)998-9460.
The successful candidate is enthusiastic and has a desire to learn in a collaborative environment.
Must pass NAVLE and obtain license to practice veterinary medicine in Arizona.
