Pioneer Equine Hospital is located in California’s central valley near Oakdale, CA. We are nestled between the foothills of the Sierra Mountains and the valley’s vast agricultural landscape. Pioneer Equine Hospital opened its doors in 1973, when two veterinarians had a vision to form the premier equine veterinary clinic in the area. Drs. Britton, Black and Jackman built one of the most recognized equine hospitals in the country for their foremost work in equine surgery and lameness. Since its opening, the doctors and staff have been successful in not only excelling in equine patient care but, more importantly, creating an atmosphere that welcomes a diverse population of equine disciplines to Pioneer Equine Hospital. The clinic has since evolved to ten veterinarians and a 22,000 square foot full service equine hospital that offers the most advanced lameness, surgical, and diagnostic imaging on the west coast. There are two spacious surgical suites as well as an extensive covered lameness evaluation area. Our large exam rooms and stalls optimize patient comfort and client ease. Our goal remains to provide the utmost and advanced equine medical technology, diagnosis, therapy and care to our patients and their owners. Our original facility is now our Reproduction center focusing on stallion and mare care and is a USDA approved facility and a Select Breeders Affiliate.
Philosophy of Internship: Pioneer Equine Hospital strives to provide the highest quality care for our patients in a friendly and fun work environment. The interns are considered an integral component of the practice. Due to the small number of primary clinicians and large caseload, we rely heavily on the interns to utilize their knowledge and skills as veterinarians and not as inexpensive labor. The interns will gain invaluable hands-on experience while acquiring decision making and client communication skills. They should attain competence in a variety of diagnostic and treatment procedures as well as vastly improve anesthetic/surgery, lameness, medical, dentistry and reproductive skills.
Prerequisite Application Process: A letter of intent, CV/resume, transcript and three letters of recommendation must be on file no later than October 1, 2022. Applicants that have visited and/or spent time completing an externship with Pioneer will have an advantage in the selection process. A license to practice in the state of California is mandatory. All applicants will be notified by October 15, 2022.
Application Deadline: 10/01/2022
Internship Duties: The interns time will be divided as follows: performing anesthesia or assisting on surgical cases, performing diagnostics, assisting the primary clinicians with case evaluation and management (including lameness evaluations, colics, routine wellness appointments, dentistry, and reproduction), imaging, and ambulatory duties. The interns perform morning treatments and assessments of the patients prior to morning rounds, as well as evening treatments. Routine treatments, both during hospital hours and after hours, are performed by our highly competent veterinary technicians, but interns are expected to assist if and when it is necessary. After rounding with their associate, each intern is responsible for completion of all daily treatment plans for hospitalized patients. Interns rotate after-hours emergencies, with associate assistance, during the week and on weekends. The interns are responsible for the daily care of all hospitalized patients. Interns will receive their own appointments as the year progresses. Guidance and help will always be available.
NOTES:
5 openings.
Additional Salary Information: Pioneer provides housing for the interns in a nice, furnished home with a pool and yard just 1.5 miles from the hospital. We also cover professional dues for AAEP and provide 10 additional days off during the year for job/residency interviews or vacation.
