Philosophy of Internship: To further educate equine professionals in specialty services as well as general equine practice. We provide these individuals with a supportive environment to work independently, as a team, and with mentors. This year is to provide exposure to the philosophy of a client oriented equine private practice that is committed to quality care and service as well as a large equine case load and an opportunity to hone their practice skills. Adequately prepare for broad base private practice or surgical/medical residency.
Additional Information: Work with staff DVM first two months. During any weekend on call, there is a backup staff veterinarian for help in the field and a surgeon on call for help on in house and referral cases. During the week, there is always a surgeon on call. Staff DVM always available for consultation.
Prerequisite Application Process: DVM at start of internship, requirements necessary for Colorado Licensure, National Accreditation, letter of intent, current photo, three letters of recommendation/resume/transcripts. Strong desire to be an equine practitioner.
Internship Duties: Interns will provide ambulatory service for clients including routine health care, acute lameness exams, reproductive work, dentistry work, medicine, lacerations, and colic workups. Interns have multiple opportunities to work with staff veterinarians on referral lameness exams and pre-purchase examinations. As the surgery intern, he or she scrubs in all surgeries for that week, works with Dr. Hill, Dr. Fenn, and Dr. Murray on lameness exams, and any other surgical cases that arise. Each in house case is assigned an intern who is primarily responsible for the case and is overseen by a staff veterinarian.
