The goal of the internship at BW Furlong & Associates is to provide up to three highly motivated and team oriented individuals with in-depth training in all aspects of ambulatory and referral equine veterinary practice with a focus on sport horses. Areas of exposure include lameness, internal medicine, surgery, routine & advanced imaging, reproduction, dentistry, ambulatory medicine, sport horse medicine & rehabilitation, and general pleasure horse practice. Mentoring is provided by a team of veterinarians, including six board certified specialists (two internal medicine specialists, a sports medicine & rehabilitation specialist, two theriogenologists, and a surgeon). Emphasis is placed on developing diagnostic skills which are complimented by more advanced diagnostic and imaging modalities, and then becoming comfortable with treatment options, procedures and outcomes.
Interns rotate in two week blocks which include internal medicine, surgery and ambulatory practice. Interns work with all veterinarians in the practice, and participate in evaluation and management of hospitalized cases as well as ambulatory emergency duty. Interns assume increasing case management, client communication, and solo ambulatory responsibilities throughout the year. Interns participate in a weekly journal club to facilitate group discussion regarding recent papers, interesting cases and new products or techniques.

Our 18 stall hospital, located in Oldwick, NJ, includes a jog strip and lungeing area, surgery suite, nuclear scintigraphy suite, clinical laboratory, isolation barn, and treatment areas. Our local offsite locations include an elective surgical facility, standing MRI facility, and a 12 stall rehabilitation center. Routine out-patient exams and procedures including lameness evaluation and treatment, gastroscopy and me...dical or surgical evaluations are provided at the hospital. Internal medicine services include evaluation and treatment for many disorders, including respiratory, neurologic, ophthalmic, gastrointestinal or cardiac abnormalities. Reproductive services, including breeding with frozen semen, embryo transfer, and semen freezing, and neonatal services are also provided in the hospital. Surgical services include arthroscopy, laparoscopy, complicated wound management, colic surgery and fracture repair. Emergency medical and surgical services are provided at the hospital 24 hours a day. Patients requiring hospitalization are overseen by board certified specialists, and 24-hour care is provided by a team of dedicated veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
We provide ambulatory coverage is available year round in New Jersey and in Ocala, Florida, as well as seasonally in Wellington, Florida, Middleburg, Virginia and at major show circuits. Ambulatory services include traditional ambulatory wellness care, such as physical examinations, vaccination and dentistry, as well as performance evaluation, lameness exams and pre-purchase exams. Advanced diagnostic imaging modalities are commonly used, such as digital radiography, ultrasonography, endoscopy and gastroscopy, as are advanced therapies, including shock wave therapy, and regenerative medicine. Reproductive services include routine breeding management with fresh, cooled, and frozen semen in addition to breeding soundness examinations for mares and stallions. Acupuncture and chiropractic services are also provided by several of our veterinarians. Our ambulatory veterinarians provide emergency services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
