The externship program at the Equine Specialty Hospital is designed for third and fourth year veterinary students who wish to gain more experience in a private practice referral setting. We encourage students to commit 2-4 weeks to their experience. Students will be assigned to a specialist for each week of their externship. This may vary pending the case load of each specialist, and the interests of the student (surgery vs. medicine). Great opportunity to learn from two board certified surgeons.
The Equine Specialty Hospital is the only referral practice in northeast Ohio with board certified surgeons serving not only Ohio but several other surrounding states. The hospital is among the best equipped facilities in the country with a full array of diagnostic modalities including MRI, nuclear scintigraphy, digital radiography, digital ultrasonography, dynamic and standing videoendoscopy, and in-house laboratory equipment. The hospital include 27 stalls, isolation facility, neonatal intensive care unit, treatment rooms, and two surgical suites. The hospital is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to optimize quality care and to facilitate the needs of our patients and clients. The student is encouraged to become involved in these cases as they arrive at the clinic.
A $50 stipend is provided per week. Onsite 2-bedroom apartment with a private bath and small kitchen is provided. Laundry facilities are also available on-site. Since students are staying on the property, they are expected to participate in all after-hours emergencies.
Our caseload focuses mainly on sports medicine and the equine athlete. However, a large number of colic's, wounds, neurologic conditions, etc are admitted on routine basis. Some cases, such as critically ill foals, occur mainly during late spring and early summer. The Equine Specialty Hospital also provides CT, MRI, Nuclear Scintigraphy, and digital radiography and ultrasound capabilities. The student is encouraged to become involved in these cases as they arrive at the clinic.
