Great Lakes Equine is a 5 doctor, exclusively equine practice located in Northeastern Wisconsin. Our average caseload is about 25-50 patients per week per veterinarian. We have a 14 stall hospital with 2 designated treatment rooms, knockdown stall (surgical suite) onsite laboratory and indoor arena. We see patients both in hospital and in the field. Our caseload is comprised of general practice / preventative care, lameness and sports medicine, routine surgery, reproduction, and internal medicine cases.
Our externship program runs March through October, with on-site housing provided. Externships begin on Mondays and are available for a minimum of five days to a maximum of three weeks. Externs are expected to assist doctors and technicians with the daily operations of our hospital. Externs will be assigned daily to one of our staff doctors. Doctors will go over procedures and diagnostic techniques of the cases that are seen that day. As the schedule permits, the externs will be scheduled with a variety of doctors to gain a broad learning experience. Externs are scheduled Monday through Friday from 8am until the last appointment or hospital case is seen. Contact information can be left for participation in emergency cases that come in after hours. Hands on experience is common though it is dependent on the experience level and aptitude of the student.
Please submit a cover letter and resume, indicating level of prior equine experience. Preference is given to 3rd and 4th year students, however externships are available to all veterinary students. You can apply by emailing hthorn@glequine.com a copy of your resume or CV, and letter of intent.
