We are searching for a highly motivated first year veterinarian to join our team as a rotating equine intern. Acadiana Equine is a multifaceted, 6 doctor equine practice with large caseloads in lameness/sports medicine, theriogenology, neonatal/internal medicine, surgery and ambulatory services. We are committed to providing the highest level of care to our patients by utilizing state of the art equipment to provide cutting edge services. Additionally, we provide embryo transfer, stallion services and advanced reproductive techniques through our partnered company, Louisiana Center for Equine Reproduction.
The internship being offered is a rotating position that will allow a new graduate the opportunity to experience and develop skill sets in a wide variety of services while being mentored by multiple, experienced veterinarians.
During breeding/foaling season, the intern will assist with our theriogenology and neonatal services. Our practice is responsible for managing nearly 1000 mares, performing approximately 500 embryo transfers and providing 150-200 oocyte aspiration procedures per year. Additionally, we manage a large caseload of neonatal/critical care foals.
Outside of breeding season, the intern will have the opportunity to participate in all the other areas of practice offered at Acadiana Equine. This time would be divided between our racetrack/sports medicine and our general practice services. The racetrack/sports medicine rotation will include daily trainer communication as well as pre-race work for Thoroughbred racehorses. Further, this rotation will include extensive exposure to lameness diagnostics, imaging and therapeutics. The final rotation of the internship will provide experience with many of the routine services provided by this practice. These include medical management for colic, wound/laceration repair and wellness/preventative medicine to name a few.
The intern will be expected to participate in the on-call rotation 50% of the time. Initially, direct supervision will be provided with all of their cases. A greater degree of independent case management should be expected as the intern increases their experience. Senior veterinarians will always be available to assist the intern with cases during business hours and on an emergency basis.
The goal of this internship is to provide the new graduate with the opportunity to expand their skills in a wide variety of fields within equine practice. We intend that, upon completion of this internship, they would be fully prepared to enter equine practice well on the way to a successful career.
