Horseshoe Indianapolis is looking to hire a Track Veterinarian for the 2024 racing season and beyond. We race from mid-April to mid-November with 123 race dates scheduled for 2024. Race days are typically Monday thru Thursday with 11 Saturdays scheduled for 2024. That is right - only 11 Saturdays and no Sundays the whole racing season. The compensation is very competitive and near or at the top for regulatory veterinarians. We are open to full-time or part-time as well as seasonal or year round employment. Track Veterinarian Job Description
Job Title: Track Veterinarian
Reports To: General Manager of Racing
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Track Veterinarian is responsible for performing veterinary exams on horses on site and to keep officials informed as to condition and racing worthiness of the horses. The Track Veterinarian will observe morning training sessions and afternoon racing. They will conduct soundness exams of horses that are racing on race days in the mornings. They will be present in the paddock and on the race track during the post parade and at the starting gate until the horses are dispatched from the gate for the race The Track Veterinarian will recommend scratching a horse to the judges if the horse in physically incapable of exerting its best effort to win. They will inspect any horse which appears in physical distress during the race or at the finish of the race and report such horse to the judges and the official veterinarian. The Track Veterinarian will refrain from directly treating or prescribing for any horse scheduled to participate at any recognized meeting except in cases of emergency, accident, or injury. They can humanely euthanize any horse deemed to be so seriously injured that it is in the best interest of the horse to do so. The Track Veterinarian will abide by all safety requirements as outlined in the Safety Manual or as required by individual departments and/or job functions and perform all other duties assigned by management.
-Must have a DVM or VMD.
-Must have a veterinary license from the state of Indiana.
-Must be able to obtain an Indiana Horse Racing License
-Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
-Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
