A fellowship in equine surgery is offered from June 2024 to May 2025. The program involves working at Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery ("ESMS") under the supervision of 3 ACVS board-certified surgeons. Fellows will rotate through the surgery, intensive care unit, and ambulatory departments with the majority of their time spent in the surgery department. The Fellow will gain advanced knowledge in a wide variety of surgeries such as arthroscopy, fracture repair, laparoscopy, upper airway procedures, and emergency exploratory laparotomy. ESMS has an annual surgery caseload of 1,000 total surgeries providing the Fellow with exposure to a large number of cases.
The Fellow will be expected to share in daily patient evaluation and care and will share primary emergency responsibility. In addition to a considerable surgery caseload, ESMS sees a substantial number of lameness cases. The Fellow will gain valuable experience in the latest diagnostic and therapeutic strategies regarding sports medicine in the equine athlete.
Qualified candidates must be a graduate from a college of veterinary medicine, licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Texas, and preferably have 1 year experience in an equine internship program.
