Kentucky Equine Hospital is seeking motivated interns who are excited to experience a well-rounded internship experience in all facets of equine ambulatory practice, surgery, sports medicine/lameness and advanced diagnostic imaging. Our services range from routine ambulatory practice to high quality surgical and sports medicine cases including advanced imaging and cutting-edge lameness treatments.
Philosophy of Internship: We believe that an internship should allow our new veterinarians the opportunity to increase their skill level, case knowledge and have continued exposure to all areas of equine practice to prepare them to continue onto a successful ambulatory career or become a successful resident applicant. As we assess your skills and provide additional training, our interns will become increasingly responsible for more independent hospital case management, ambulatory and emergency cases. Our interns will always have a senior clinician as back up when they start taking cases independently. We have 24-7 veterinary technician coverage; our technicians are responsible for anesthetic duties, hospital treatments and advanced imaging studies.
Internship Duties: Our interns will provide daily examinations and maintain medical records for hospitalized cases. Dr. Sutter has an active routine surgical case load and intern doctors’ scrub into surgical procedures and perform post-surgical care and assessment to his patients. Construction on our new surgical and imaging building is expected to be complete in 2024 and emergency surgical services will be offered once this building is complete. You will assist our practitioners with radiology, anesthesiology, surgery, lameness, reproduction, advanced imaging, pre-purchase exams, video endoscopy/gastroscopy, ambulatory medical examinations, referral cases, emergency cases, and laboratory testing. Our interns will rotate between surgical (hospital) and ambulatory rotations and will have increasingly independent case load as they advance in their internship.
Practice Information: Our case load consists of 60% Lameness/Sports Medicine/Surgery/Advanced Imaging and 40% ambulatory/reproductive. 80% of our hospital case load is surgical and advanced imaging patients with the balance of cases being medical, ophthalmologic and reproductive. Our services include but are not limited to: Surgery (Routine orthopedic and soft tissue); Imaging -Digital Radiography, Digital Ultrasonography, Video Endoscopy/Gastroscopy, Nuclear Scintigraphy, MRI, PET Scan; CT (coming in 2024); Sports Medicine; Shock Wave Therapy, Joint therapies (traditional, Stem Cell Therapy, IRAP, PRP); Alternative medicine (chiropractic and Acupuncture); Reproduction- full range of mare and stallion services and Embryo services; Routine ambulatory services- including dentistry, herd health/wellness, and emergency cases; in house Laboratory Services (Idexx machines) including Coggins testing . Dr Erica Tolar, DACVO also maintains her equine ophthalmologic patients out of KEH and provides advanced ophthalmologic procedures, surgery and hospitalized care.
Our interns will work closely with Dr. Sutter DACVS, ACVSMR on surgical and advanced sports medicine cases. We have five full time and one part time ambulatory associates that have varied areas of interest and expertise that our interns will spend time learning with. KEH has two surgeons (one boarded and one board eligible sitting for boards in 2024), two ACVSMR boarded practitioners, and three of our doctors have chiropractic and acupuncture certifications.
Our internship duration is for one year and typically starts in June and go to the following June. We have two internship positions available yearly. On site housing (housing allowance also considered), CE allowance and time off, membership dues, liability insurance, one-week vacation and health insurance are provided.
