All interns are required to apply for a DEA Certificate (NOT license) prior to the start of employment. Upon signing an offer letter, the resident will be provided instructions on how to obtain the DEA certificate. Matching candidate must obtain Texas licensure before the start of the internship. All applicants must meet requirements for full licensure in Texas at the start of the internship. These requirements include being either a graduate of an AVMA accredited College of Veterinary Medicine or having certification by the AVMA's Education Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) or the Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education (PAVE). Documentation of successful completion of these requirements must be sent directly from the granting institution to the Authorized Administrative Official at Texas A&M University and received by the application deadline. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all requirements for application have been successfully completed by the application deadline. Transcripts must be sent from the final degree granting institution or institutions. Note that the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences will not sponsor applicants for H-1B or E-3 nonimmigrant employment categories. Interns will be required to sign a non-compete agreement upon acceptance into the program. The Internship consists of full-time participation on the Equine and Food Animal Services in the Large Animal Hospital, including both out-patient and hospitalized cases. The intern will work through clinical cases under supervision by senior faculty and residents. In addition to performing their duties during regular working hours, interns are also on duty after hours and during holiday periods when the rest of the University is closed. Interns work the hours necessary to provide appropriate care to their animal patients irrespective of the time of day. Emergency duty is shared between the interns equally. This rotating internship position is an internship with emphasis in equine internal medicine, sports medicine, and surgery. The intern will spend their time rotating between Equine Surgery services (orthopedics and soft tissue), Equine Internal Medicine, Equine Sports Medicine & Imaging, and Food Animal Medicine & Surgery services within the large animal hospital. The intern will also have the opportunity to choose one elective rotation (ex. Diagnostic imaging, theriogenology, field service, clinical pathology, etc.). Interns train under the supervision of licensed veterinary specialists who are board-certified in a specific discipline of veterinary medicine, as well as residents. Interns are expected to examine, diagnose, treat and manage patients, interact with clients (animal owners), teach senior veterinary students, and to generate income for the VMTH. In addition to regular service rotations, we expect the interns to participate in topic and patient rounds and to prepare and deliver one high quality seminar to colleagues in their academic department. Interns are encouraged to become involved in clinical research as opportunities and interests allow. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with more than 30 large animal faculty and 20 interns and residents in the VMTH. Additional compensation may be available up to a maximum of $5,000 per year based on the number of after-hours emergencies seen by the intern. Interns will be eligible to participate in a group insurance package that includes group health, life, dependent life, disability, accidental death and dismemberment policies and a retirement program. This position participates in a retirement program, effective on your date of hire and is eligible for an additional benefits package. You may choose to immediately enroll in a Texas A&M University System sponsored insurance plan or defer enrollment until either the first of the month following your hire date or until the first of the month following a 60-day waiting period.
