Durango Equine Veterinary Clinic is seeking an Intern Veterinarian for June 2024-June 2025.

Durango Equine Veterinary Clinic is a 3-doctor equine exclusive practice, located just west of Phoenix in Buckeye, Arizona. Durango Equine is a general practice with an emphasis on reproductive services. Our clinic offers routine health care and management, reproductive medicine, selective surgeries, and chiropractic medicine. Durango Equine is the only clinic in the West Valley to offer 24-hour emergency care in both the clinic and ambulatory settings, 365 days a year. We have a board certified Theriogenologist on staff for all our reproduction services.

Reproductive services include cycle management and breeding with both cooled shipped and frozen semen, stallion collections and shipping, freezing semen, and embryo and oocyte retrievals. 

The internship at Durango Equine Veterinary Clinic allows a new graduate the opportunity to experience and develop skills in a wide variety of services while being mentored by multiple, experienced veterinarians. The internship can have a reproduction focus in the spring if the intern wishes, preparing them for a Theriogenology residency. The intern will be given as much responsibility as appropriate and receive ample mentorship. By the end of the internship, they will be comfortable with the wide variety of skills that encompass equine practice. Our goal is that the intern would be fully prepared to enter equine practice and have a successful career as an equine practitioner. 

The intern is responsible for the care of the three resident horses at the clinic including yearly preventive medicine and emergency care when needed. DEVC foals out approximately 5-10 mares per year, which the intern will assist the Theriogenologist with, and then manage as they become more familiar and comfortable. The clinic does not provide 24-hour care but will occasionally hospitalize patients with less severe conditions. The intern will work with the doctor on the case and oversee daily treatments for any hospitalized patient. Once the intern is comfortable with emergency and general medicine calls, they will be added into the call schedule and serve as the on-call veterinarian no more than 40% of the time (11 out of every 28 days). The first half of the internship is focused on learning and fine-tuning skills, while the second half of the internship allows the intern to have more independent case management. Throughout the internship, senior veterinarians will always be available for consult and assistance both during business hours and on an emergency basis. 

Estimated work load: 8-5 M-F. 8-12 Sat. Emergency duty up to 40% of time. Additional hours during breeding season. Backup is always available.
