Staff: We have 4 veterinarians, including medicine specialist, one certified veterinary acupuncturist, and chiropractic care. We have up to four intern veterinarians at any time, as well as 10 veterinary technicians and four front office staff members; and barn crew.Practice Facilities: 15 stalls in main hospital, 16 outside paddocks, 6 stall barn, 4 isolation stalls, 3 ICU stalls, 3 treatment rooms, radiology room, surgical suite and 2 padded recovery stalls.
Case Load: Approximately 4000 in-hospital and ambulatory cases per year.
Types of Cases: 25% medical, 25% surgery (soft tissue and some orthopedic), 25% lameness, 15% neonatal, 10% reproduction.Philosophy of Internship: Retama Equine Internship is designed to enhance knowledge and gain experience by exposing recent graduates to a large volume of diverse cases. We will promote the development of technical and diagnostic skills, emphasizing evidence-based medicine, allowing the intern to gain confidence in all aspects of equine medicine. The interns are considered an integral component of the practice and will be treated as primary clinicians with increasing responsibilities as their confidence grows.
Prerequisites for Internship: DVM degree, letter of intent, resume or CV, three letters of recommendation, Texas DVM license or eligibility for licensure in the state of Texas. Applicants that have visited our hospital and performed an externship will have an advantage in the selection process.Internship Duties: Daily duties include treatment and assessment of hospitalized patients prior to rounds. Interns will rotate between anesthesia, hospital/medicine, surgery, lameness, and ambulatory, assisting with daytime emergencies and in-hospital case therapy. Approximately 30% of the time will be spent assisting primary clinicians with lameness evaluations, including performing nerve blocks and intraarticular injections, 30% assisting primary clinicians on reproduction and foaling; 20% in hospital emergencies/medicine cases, 10% assessing and treating hospitalized patients, and 10% ambulatory duties.
Additionally, interns are required to maintain accurate medical records, and client communication logs. Emergencies will be spread out equally among interns, preferably one night during the week and rotating weekends. As experience is gained, primary emergencyon-call duties will be assigned, always with a primary clinician as a backup. After-hour treatments are performed by night veterinary technicians, but interns are responsible for daily treatment sheets in hospitalized patients.
Interns are required to participate in monthly journal clubs, as well as hospital tours and community events.
Employee Benefits: 10 days leave, 4 days leave for CE, Professional Liability Insurance and AAEP dues.
