Six doctor 100% equine practice near Rochester, NY offers a year long internship. 85% ambulatory. Work that is not done on farms is done in our clinic which has a treatment area, stocks, riding ring for lameness evaluation, padded stall for doing minor surgeries as well as 8 stalls for hospitalization. Practice is well equipped with ultrasound, DR, gastroscope, endoscope, shock wave, therapeutic laser and motorized dental tools. Most breeds and disciplines are represented in the Genesee Valley, providing doctors satisfying and challenging work.
New graduates develop the technical, diagnostic, and communication skills that are needed to become successful in ambulatory practice. During the training period the intern works with other veterinarians in partnership to deliver care in the clinic and at the farms. The intern is in charge of overseeing care for hospitalized patients. The intern works independently about 50% of the time after November 1.
Clinic has trained more than 20 new graduates in our intern program. Doctors cooperate on cases and round at least twice weekly to discuss patient progress, novel treatments and to troubleshoot in general. Periodically, meetings are held to discuss journal articles as well as to share information learned at CE programs.
Pre-requisites for application: DVM degree, resume, letter of intent, veterinary school transcript, completion of National Board licensing by the end of the academic year, 3 letters of recommendation, eligibility to drive a motor vehicle in New York State. Externship is strongly encouraged but not currently required.
Estimated workload entails scheduled and "same day" emergency calls M-F with one weekday off every other week. After hours duty with a practice veterinarian 3 nights/week and 2 weekends/month for the initial 3 months of the internship. Intern to provide back up assistance to the on call veterinarian 2 nights per week and one weekend per month after the initial three months. Intern to be primary on call one weekend per month and one night per week after the initial three months. When intern is primary, there is always another veterinarian available for back up as needed. Intern is free from 7:30 am Saturday until 7:30 am Monday twice a month.
Terms of employment are a 12 month contract, one year non-compete agreement.
