Internship Information
To start, the interns will accompany the emergency clinician on most calls. As comfort level and competence develop, the interns will be assigned primary duty with back-up.
Primary Emergency Duties (Nights / Week): 1-2
Primary Emergency Duties (Weekends / Month): 1-2
Terms of Employment: Twelve months (additional one week overlap), starting in June.
Internship Salary: $36,000 with benefits - package exceeds $47,000.
Philosophy of Internship: The Wilhite & Frees Equine Hospital internship will provide exposure to wellness health care, dentistry, lameness, referral medical and surgical care, anesthesia, and components of practice management. This experience will provide the necessary skills to successfully enter private equine practice or to compete for a specialty residency. The first 2-3 three months the interns work closely with each of the staff veterinarians to acclimate to our practice philosophy, standards of care, and to be introduced to our clientele. Following this period the interns will continue to assist in surgery, perform anesthesia, take part in referral cases, but also see primary cases in-house and in the field.
Internship Duties: The interns are responsible for monitoring and care of all hospitalized patients and are to be present at all in-house emergencies. The interns will either assist in surgery or perform anesthesia and will work with a staff veterinarian on all referral cases. When ready, the interns will provide primary care (lameness, reproduction, general health, dentistry, etc...) under supervision or with back-up as needed. Case discussion / rounds are held each week.
Additional Information: We have four permanent staff veterinarians (a board certified surgeon), one to two interns, and three consulting specialty veterinarians, seven veterinary technicians or assistants, and office staff (reception, scheduling, billing).
