Brown Equine Hospital is accepting eager veterinary students for in-hospital externship experiences. Brown Equine Hospital is located in Somerset, Pennsylvania, a small town nestled in the Laurel Highlands, a region known for its beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities. Brown Equine Hospital is a referral hospital with one boarded surgeon, a doctor boarded in large animal internal medicine, and 24-hour technical staff. The caseload is varied and includes medical, surgical, lameness, and emergency cases in western and English performance horses, pleasure horses, Draft horses, and Standardbred racehorses. The hospital is comprised of a five-stall, climate controlled ICU that accompanies 3-stall and 9-stall barns for elective and outpatient cases. The hospital provides equipment capable of performing soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries, digital radiography, ultrasonography, and endoscopy.
Students will gain experience through discussing cases with clinicians, assisting doctors with work-up and management of inpatients and outpatients, assisting in surgery, and observing and performing ultrasound examinations among other tasks. Externs are expected to assist with daily inpatient and outpatient procedures and care and are strongly encouraged to participate in our after-hours emergency service. Hands-on learning (including ample opportunities to “scrub in”), stall side rounds, and a busy caseload allows the motivated extern to rapidly expand their knowledge base and experience in all aspects of equine practice.
Interested students should send inquiries to Dr. Jacob Swink at jswink@brownequinehospital.com.
