The University of Missouri-Columbia, College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery’s Equine service invites applications for an equine internship position.
The internship provides experience in all rotations within the section (medicine, surgery, ambulatory) but may be designed to emphasize clinical experience in an area of interest. The position provides the opportunity to work in a progressive environment where continual learning, high standards, and teamwork are emphasized. Primary goals of the internship program are to enable the intern to practice veterinary medicine with an increased depth of experience, to help the intern achieve their learning goals, and, if desired, to help satisfy requirements for entry into residency board certification programs.
The duration of the internship will be 6 - 18 months depending on the goals of the selected candidate. Interns share in clinical service and emergency duty rotation with other equine house officers and participate in clinical instruction of third- and fourth-year veterinary students during their clinical rotations. In order to minimize response time for hospitalized patients, interns are expected to obtain housing within a 20-minute radius of the Veterinary Health Center. As part of their internship program, all interns attend resident/intern seminars and present one 25-minute seminar. Interns also participate in clinical rotation rounds and have opportunities to attend and participate in the various journal/book clubs and faculty/resident rounds organized by the equine section. Possibilities for interaction or participation in research or educational projects also exist.
Annual salary will be $30,000. This position is eligible for University benefits. Licensure in the State of Missouri, a Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs permit, and USDA accreditation are required. Licensing fees are $290 plus an additional $25 if a provisional license is required.
1) You must obtain a license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Missouri by or shortly after start date. For details regarding licensing, requirements, applications, and preparatory materials see Missouri Veterinary Medical Board: http://pr.mo.gov/veterinarian.asp For the unlicensed applicant; application forms for the Missouri State Board Examination will be e-mailed immediately upon being accepted to the program. Plan on sitting for the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board exam by mid-June, preferably earlier, to ensure licensure as soon as possible after program commences. Completion of a 320-hour preceptorship is a requirement for full licensure. These required hours may be completed concurrently with the internship. Alternately, prior to graduation, hours spent in private practice externships/preceptorships may qualify for licensure. 2) Any offer of employment is contingent upon: a) Successful background screening which may include, but not be limited to, criminal history, verification of employment and education, and driving records. b) Verification of identity, residency status and eligibility for employment. For the purpose of university practice, your federal DEA registration will utilize our VHC DEA registration. BNDD certificate must be obtained by shortly after start date. d) Obtaining USDA accreditation. 3) Maintaining a valid driver’s license for the duration of the program is required. 4) The program is restricted to United States Citizens, United States Permanent Residents (i.e. those holding a “Green Card”), or non-residents who have Employment Authorization from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service valid for the duration of the program. The School provides neither assistance for nor support for obtaining such Employment Authorization.
