Philosophy of internship:
To provide an internship that allows new graduates to develop into seasoned, highly capable, veterinarians. We hope that a well-motivated intern can use this opportunity as a springboard to their next endeavor whether that be a specialty residency or private practice. Interns are involved in every aspect of case management from client relations to surgical decisions as their confidence and abilities progress.
About the Practice:
The Waller Equine Hospital is a busy five-doctor equine referral/general practice northwest of Houston. There is two board certified surgeons, and three general practitioners on staff and clinic is staffed 24 hours per day with technical staff to monitor and care for patients.
The practice sees an average of 36 cases per day with approximately 2 daytime emergencies and 2.5 out-of-hours emergencies per day. The varied caseload allows exposure to all aspects of equine practice including general practice, reproduction, lameness, emergencies, and referral surgical and medical cases.
About the Internship:
Interns are assigned to a different doctor each week. The intern’s duties include assisting with referral and routine appointments, client communication, intake and treatment of daytime emergencies, attending to overflow appointments, and scrubbing in for surgeries. As interns gain confidence and proficiency, they are scheduled their own appointments with a senior doctor on backup.
Emergency duty requirements:
The intern will be on call every other night with a senior veterinarian for the first eight weeks. Once the intern becomes proficient and confident, they will take primary emergency duty one week a month with a backup senior veterinarian. After the initial eight weeks of training, no daytime responsibilities are scheduled while on emergency duty. Technicians staff the hospital 24 hours per day for patient monitoring, treatments, and the administration of fluids.
