The Department of Clinical Sciences and the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Colorado State University offer a 6 – ~12-month Equine Specialty Internship with an emphasis on Equine Medicine and Neurology at the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
The internship is designed to provide clinical experience in many aspects of equine practice through the Equine Medicine service as well as an opportunity for research experience through ongoing projects pertaining to equine neurology. Elective rotations through equine emergency and critical care, equine surgery, equine ambulatory, anesthesia, radiology, and livestock medicine can be arranged depending on the intern’s interest. The successful candidate will assist the existing faculty with clinical duty throughout the internship period and will be expected to participate in the clinical teaching of veterinary students. After hours emergency duty will be expected and will be shared with the existing equine medicine and surgery house officers. Primary case responsibility will be expected once the intern and faculty are comfortable. The equine hospital sees a wide variety of different types of cases with approximately 2200-2500 horses seen yearly in the hospital.
TRAINING
CLINICAL SERVICE / WEEKS
In accordance with college policy, residents and interns are not permitted to practice veterinary medicine in private/specialty veterinary practices in Colorado during the course of their program.

PREREQUISITES
* Case management (including patient care and medical records) under the supervision of faculty on the assigned rotations.
* Participation in clinical rounds and training of veterinary students.
* Participation in equine in-house emergency duty: primary duty MWFSatSun (9-11wks), TuTh (9-12wks); secondary on-call duty M-Sun (9-11wks).
* Course Work: No formal course work is required but interns are welcome to participate in resident graduate courses and seminars.
* Research project: No formal requirement but intern interest can be explored for a review article, case report, or research project with a faculty member.
* Journal Club: Intern will participate in weekly journal club with equine medicine or sports medicine faculty and residents.
* Seminar presentation: Intern will be encouraged to present client continuing education seminars or veterinary CE if they choose to attend a meeting.
* Wet laboratory instruction: Intern will assist the equine clinical faculty in teaching of second and third year veterinary student laboratories.
