The Louisiana State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital is opening positions for multiple full time staff ER clinicians to round out our rapidly expanding Emergency & Critical Care service!
Our staff ER doctors will play a pivotal role in management of incoming cases on a primary basis. It is expected that these clinicians will efficiently practice high quality medicine and will serve as a positive role model for students and interns as they learn to navigate the (often) turbulent waters of emergency medicine. Our hospital is open 24/7 including weekends and holidays. ER shifts are scheduled for daytime, swing, and overnight hours each day. Scheduling will allow some degree of flexibility to accommodate the needs of the clinician (within reason). Shifts on weekends and holidays are expected. Teaching duties other than clinical instruction are available and encouraged but not required for these positions.
The Emergency & Critical Care service is overseen by two ACVECC diplomates (with a currently open position for a third) and three ECC residents. Three to four interns are assigned to the emergency service for various shifts each day. The emergency medicine clinical rotation typically hosts between 6-10 students each 2-week rotation. The emergency service is supported by 4 full time technicians with additional positions (both current and planned) open to expand to 8 by next year for maximum coverage.
Our clinicians are supported by faculty specialists in internal medicine, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, cardiology, radiology, anesthesiology, medical and radiation oncology, dermatology, ophthalmology, theriogenology, and integrative and rehabilitation medicine. A robust on-call schedule is in place after hours for all hospital services to provide urgent consultation on cases seen in the ER. While LSU boasts a robust wildlife and exotic pet population, the Zoo Med service intakes their own emergencies and we do not typically see them on our small animal emergency service.
The LSU VTH is located on the outer rim of the main campus of LSU. Ample parking space is available with multiple different permitting options. A large upgrade in space for the hospital is scheduled for completion this summer which will allow the ER to migrate to a dedicated and fully equipped space (with new equipment)!
The hospital is located just south of downtown Baton Rouge. There is no shortage of festivities, social opportunities, and live entertainment in this area. Louisiana is well known for its food, culture, hospitality, and fun! If you don’t like ice, snow, or cold weather, the climate will certainly suit you.
For questions about the positions, please contact: Dr. Ryan Smith or Dr. Virginie Wurlod.
