Great Lakes Equine is a 5 doctor, exclusively equine practice located in Northeastern Wisconsin. Our average caseload is about 25-50 patients per week per veterinarian. We have a 14 stall hospital with 2 designated treatment rooms, knockdown stall (surgical suite) onsite laboratory and indoor arena. We see patients both in hospital and in the field. Our caseload is comprised of general practice / preventative care, lameness and sports medicine, surgery, reproduction, and internal medicine cases.
Our goal is to produce a well-rounded equine practitioner with an emphasis on sports medicine and wellness care. The internship will develop the diagnostic, technical, business, communication, and life skills of new graduates to adequately prepare them for residency and private practice positions. Great Lakes Equine prides ourselves on having a positive work environment where a new graduate will feel supported in learning the profession. Our large and varied caseload gives our doctors the opportunity to provide the highest quality of medicine for a wonderful group of patients and clients. At one point all of our doctors have completed rigorous internships themselves and are excited to teach another doctor about our various areas of expertise, including podiatry, diagnostic imaging, lameness, and complementary medicine. Our top-of-the-line facilities allow us to utilize progressive, evidence-based techniques, including IRAP, PRP, ProStride, Shockwave, and etc.
Interns will have a large amount of hands-on experience from day one. You will be actively participating in lameness evaluations – including diagnostic blocks and joint injections – as well as castrations, dental floats, reproductive procedures, and critical hospitalized patients. Interns will initially work with a clinician and then have increasing responsibility and autonomy as they develop confidence and proficiency. Interns will have rotating emergency duty and will be responsible for hospitalized patients, but are ensured 1 night off per week and 1 weekend off per month.
GLE provides interns with AAEP/AVMA dues, liability insurance, continuing education allowance, an ambulatory vehicle, and work phone. Beautiful Northeastern Wisconsin offers a variety of outdoor activities, as well as a local mid-sized metropolitan area with extensive nightlife, shopping, and theaters. Milwaukee, Chicago, and Minneapolis are also an easy drive away for a weekend trip.
