Rotating Equine Internship. 3 positions available annually

Brazos Valley Equine Hospitals was founded in 1987 by Dr. Terrell “T-Bone” Buchanan. His dedication and love for the equine industry has led the practice to develop multiple facilities across Texas, including Navasota, Stephenville, and Cypress. The Salado location joined Brazos Valley Equine Hospitals in 2014. Interns will be led by John Janicek, DVM, MS,  DACVS. and Dr. Beau Whitaker, DVM, CERP.  Dr. Janicek has published over 30 veterinary surgery articles, multiple.Dr. Janicek has published over 30 veterinary surgery articles, multiple veterinary surgery book chapters, and has presented numerous veterinary surgery related topics at the regional, national, and international meetings.

Dr. Janicek’s clinical specialties include:

Wobblers surgery

Neurological disease

Orthopedic and soft tissue surgery

Dr. Whitaker’s clinical specialties include sports medicine (English and Western performance horses), advanced regenerative medicine therapies, and rehabilitation therapies.  Many research projects and clinical trials are performed throughout the year under the supervision of Dr. Whitaker.  

Primary duties of the intern will include daily treatments, evaluation and record-keeping of hospitalized patients, assisting staff veterinarians in lameness exams, surgeries, dentistry, reproduction and neonatal care. Night duties consist of patient treatments, intensive care monitoring, as well as, assisting with emergencies. Interns will split emergency and night duties as they rotate between inpatient and outpatient evaluations. An expected breakdown of daily responsibilities includes: hospital treatments 5%, hospital ICU monitoring 5%, outpatient lameness 30%, outpatient medicine 20%, ambulatory 20%, surgery 10%, emergency 5%,  and anesthesia <5%.

The amount of supervision will depend on the intern's experience and licensing status and may vary as the year progresses. The intern is expected to develop skills to allow handling of in-house appointments and emergency cases, however the intern will always be under direct or indirect supervision as there is always a staff veterinarian within 30 minutes of the hospital.

Interns will be expected to present a 45-60 minute summary of new information and techniques learned during their continuing education meetings. Interns are encouraged to identify a case or subject, which with the assistance of a staff veterinarian, would be appropriate for publication. Interns will assist with in house and ambulatory emergencies on a rotating basis. Interns are expected to attend virtual presentations every two weeks which involve interns from other Brazos Valley Equine Hospitals locations, as well as other interns from other veterinary hospitals; these presentations are presented by Brazos Valley Equine Hospitals staff veterinarians on a rotating schedule.

Total caseload in 2019 exceeded 12,000 patients treated. 80% in house and 20% ambulatory.

Positive attitude and desire to work hard as part of a team. A prior visit or externship is strongly encouraged.
