Come Join Our Team!
Southern Equine Service is located in Aiken, SC - the heart of SC horse country. Our internship was established in 2005. Our practice consists of 8 full time veterinarians that work as a close knit team. Our facilities include two covered lameness arena, 40 stalls, nuclear scintigraphy suite, two surgery suites with induction/recovery stall, MRI, four treatment rooms with stocks, and two radiology suites. We are also equipped with a Reproductive facility with breeding shed and a phantom for stallion collection and processing of frozen and cooled semen. Elective surgeries are performed (arthroscopies, castrations, enucleations, airway surgeries, splint bone removals, neurectomies, etc.) Our caseload covers a variety of disciplines including eventing, show jumping, dressage, cutting, rodeo, polo, thoroughbred race horses, etc.
The Philosophy at Southern Equine Service is to develop a well-rounded practitioner solid in the basics of equine veterinary medicine. The internship has excellent mentorship throughout the year from our veterinarians. We strive for our interns to be confident and ready to practice after the year is completed. To prepare and expose the intern for ambulatory, outpatient, and in-house cases as well as emergencies. The internship is designed to suit those most interested in general equine veterinary medicine with an emphasis on sports medicine, advanced diagnostic imaging, reproduction, and alternative medicine (chiropractic and acupuncture) although we have had interns successfully go on to internal medicine and theriogenology residencies and fellowships.
The internship is from June 1 - June 1 year-round contract (flexible)
Internship duties include alternating in-hospital, outpatient, and ambulatory weeks of duty. While in-house, interns assist with emergencies, in-hospital cases, surgeries, and out-patient appointments if time allows. Outpatient intern will assist with outpatient appointments, backup the hospital intern as needed throughout the week. Ambulatory intern will assist the doctors on the road.
Interns are taught how to handle cases by working closely with senior doctors. Interns are able to learn about induction and how to be comfortable monitoring anesthesia, and are also able to scrub in on some surgeries. Internship duties develop throughout the internship to include primary emergency duty 6 months into the internship, as well as seeing ambulatory and in-house cases solo, but with senior practice members always available for consultation.
Prerequisite Application Process: Applicants must fill out Internship application form found on the website: www.southernequineservice.com. The following are also required: Letter of Intent, 3 letters of recommendation, Resume/CV, Official Transcript, Passport-sized Photo, and Externship at Southern Equine Service of at least 2 weeks' duration (flexible).
