Additional Information:
The Equine Surgery and Medicine Internship program at the University of Illinois is designed to provide training in the diagnosis, treatment, and postoperative management of horses with a wide range of diseases. This experience will provide knowledge and training that is an excellent foundation for equine practice or a specialty residency in equine surgery, medicine, sports medicine, or critical care. Interns will share assignments in equine surgical, equine medical and equine primary care services. They will participate in equine after-hours emergencies within the hospital and surrounding ambulatory service. Additionally, interns provide support to large animal critical care services. Interns may elect to receive training with other ancillary services such as anesthesiology, theriogenology, or the farrier service during the internship. The caseload at the University of Illinois is large and diverse, including Standardbred and Quarter Horse racehorses, sport and working horses, and pleasure horses. We have weekly didactic rounds for interns which is protected time for lectures and labs specifically for this group. Interns are required to attend journal club and are strongly encouraged to attend the resident classes in medicine and surgery.
Eligibility for Illinois licensure is not required for participation in this program; however, Illinois licensure and USDA accreditation are highly desirable. Intern candidates must have graduated from an AVMA accredited college of veterinary medicine or have successfully completed the ECFVG.
Due to financial issues related to prompt entry into this program, participants must be a citizen of the US, a US permanent resident (i.e. holding a “green card”), or other foreign national with employment authorization from US Citizenship and Immigration Services valid for and during the program’s period of proposed training without our provision of assistance, support or sponsorship in obtaining employment authorization. The intern must also be available to begin work on June 16, 2022.
The University of Illinois offers a complete benefits package with a reduced vacation benefit specific to these titles to allow for completion of the clinical duties required by the intern certificate.
Malpractice coverage and Illinois veterinary license are provided under the University of Illinois blanket plan for services provided for university clients only. Parking is available for a monthly fee.
The UIUC is an AA-EOE.
