This is a skilled professional, full-time position requiring the performance of surgical sterilization and overseeing all medical examination and treatment of animals impounded at the Marion County Animal Center. Will include supervising any surgical assisting staff.

This is a front-line position for providing excellent customer service to members of the general public and other County employees. Personal contact occurs with other employees of the unit, employees of other departments in the County, citizens, and customers of the department. Service is provided in person or by phone contact.
Officially designated as a lead worker over one or more employees. Provides continual work guidance, review of work product, and resolution of work problems. May provide some input regarding job performance. Will be responsible for veterinary student trainees and provide basic evaluations to educational institution.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSES, AND CERTIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Doctoral Degree of Veterinarian Medicine. Minimum of two years’ experience required. Background in Shelter Medicine strongly preferred.
Possession of a valid Florida Driver License, and a valid Florida Veterinarian License to practice.
Must become a Marion County resident within 6 months of appointment to position.

To accomplish the tasks of this position, the employee will be required to use the following machines and equipment: animal medical/surgical/grooming tools and equipment, computers, general office equipment, electronic tablet/smart phone, cameras, respirator, hazardous material protective garments.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to physically perform high-volume surgery of animals for long periods of time. Must be able to pick up and restrain fractious animals and safely walk strong dogs. Will occasionally be required to climb or balance, and to run; will be required to talk and hear; and will frequently be required to stand, walk, handle or feel, reach with hands or arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, smell, and to lift up to seventy five pounds. Special vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must have ability to work cautiously and expeditiously in a fast-paced environment. Agile physical reflexes are necessary to avoid injuries to self, coworkers, and animals.
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals; will occasionally be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, and wet or humid conditions. Will be exposed to zoonotic diseases, fractious animals, animal waste, and blood. Will occasionally enter private citizen’s homes and properties. The noise level for environment is loud.
