Additional Information:
A Surgery Internship is offered at the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute from June, 2021 to June, 2022. The program involves working at the Davidson Surgery Center under the direct supervision of seven surgeons. The Internship provides an unparalleled learning experience in a clinical setting that has an annual caseload of more than 6,000 procedures. The Internship represents an exceptional learning opportunity for those who wish to pursue a surgical residency program. Greater than 90% of the intern experience will take place at the Davidson Surgery Center, making the intern extremely competitive in the VIRMP.
The objectives of the internship are to allow the participant the opportunity to gain knowledge regarding various surgical procedures, instruction on anesthesia, surgical nursing, emergency resuscitation, endoscopic procedures, radiology, international horse sales, and lameness training all under the direct supervision of a surgeon. The Intern will be expected to share in day-to-day patient evaluation and care and to be responsible for daily elective and emergency duties under the guidance and supervision of a surgeon at the Davidson Surgery Center.
Typical surgical cases that the Intern will learn to manage include abdominal (such as colic), thoracic, reproductive (such as C-sections and dystocias), orthopedic (such as angular limb deformities and long bone fractures), ophthalmology, reconstructive, and minimally invasive (such as Arthroscopy, Laparoscopy, Thoracoscopy, and Laser Surgery through Flexible Endoscopy). Additionally, interns will utilize state-of-the-art diagnostic tools including MRI, fluoroscope, digital radiography, and nuclear scintigraphy.
Qualified candidates must be a graduate from a college of veterinary medicine. Applicants are invited to submit a letter of professional interest. The letter should include a statement of career goals and a curriculum vitae and three letters of recommendation. Applicant’s letters of intent and letters of recommendation should be addressed to Dr. Ernest Martinez. Please e-mail information to: Emily Siffert at esiffert@hagyard.com.
