The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at North Carolina State University (NC State) is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education and is currently ranked 4th among the nation’s colleges of veterinary medicine in the U.S. News and World Report survey. The college has gained international recognition on the strength of its teaching, research, engagement, and patient care efforts.
Located on 180 acres near downtown Raleigh, the College of Veterinary Medicine encompasses 20 buildings on the main Centennial Biomedical Campus. The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina and the Southeast. The VH is an integrated health care center for companion, equine and farm animals. We exist to further the teaching mission of the NC State CVM and to provide state-of-the-art patient care.
The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board certified specialists that are nationally and internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, more than 35,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state of the art specialty healthcare, expert clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students, interns and residents, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.
The College provides instruction and guidance to DVM students, graduate students and interns and residents. Instruction is in three departments: Clinical Sciences, Molecular Biomedical Sciences, and Population Health & Pathobiology. In addition to the four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, the college is the home of the NCSU Comparative Biomedical Sciences graduate training program, an umbrella program that provides interdisciplinary training for doctoral students across the entire NCSU campus.
The College’s research enterprise is housed in 3 modern buildings on the CVM campus including the Biomedical Partnership Center (BPC), a 40,000-square foot building that opened in 2017. The BPC houses CVM faculty in research laboratories shared with faculty from the College of Engineering, including the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at NC State and the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill, as well as industry partners working in related biomedical research fields.

The OpportunityThe NC State CVM invites applications for the position of Hospital Administrator for the NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH). This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to provide visionary leadership for a world-class veterinary hospital at one of the nation’s leading colleges of veterinary medicine. The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services, some with 24/7 operations, with board certified specialists that are nationally and internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine.
The PositionThe Hospital Administrator provides operational oversight and leadership for the hospital personnel and finances and is responsible for maintaining an environment that produces high quality patient care, client service, teaching, and research. In collaboration with the Associate Dean and Director of Veterinary Medical Services, the successful candidate will ensure a high-performing and engaged culture within the hospital and college community through support and development of the hospital’s veterinary technical and administrative employees toward the goal of quality patient care and excellent client service. These efforts will be complemented by assisting with faculty engagement in VH operations.
Because of the complexity of the teaching hospital environment, management of the facility must be conducted in a manner that engages the CVM to actively participate in achieving our vision and goals through transparent and inclusive leadership.
The Hospital Administrator must work collaboratively within a team environment and effectively develop and lead teams. The successful candidate will be responsive to faculty, staff, management, and client concerns and ensure effective and consistent communication and feedback channels among these various customer groups.
The successful candidate will assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining practices and policies to ensure hospital operations remain efficient, financially viable, and positive for patients, clients and employees. Overall hospital safety and compliance with VH policy will also be key components of this position. The Administrator will be responsible for monthly financial statements and preparation of annual budget, operations plan and forecasting which will be reported to the Associate Dean and Hospital Board.
Qualifications Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree in business or related field with five to seven years of experience in administrative and financial management in a veterinary hospital/large specialty practice or human hospital environment or equivalent independent experience.
Additionally, the successful candidate will possess most, if not all, of the following qualities or experience:
Preference will be given to candidates with a MBA or MHA, or relevant master’s degree with five or more years of experience in administrative and financial management in a veterinary or human hospital environment. A CVMP, and previous experience in higher education teaching hospital or large specialty practice is also preferred.
