Additional Information:
We are a 4 doctor exclusively equine practice located 10min west of Stony Plain, Alberta. The practice was originally developed as a busy ambulatory practice that grew into a clinic with an extensive hospital setting. There is a large, heated arena for lameness exams and exercising horses year round, numerous stalls with cameras for monitoring, covered outdoor pens, round pen, and a complete lab with in-house capabilities to run blood work and fecal egg counts.During breeding season, we have a full-time veterinarian that focuses exclusively on reproduction. We breed a large number of mares with fresh and frozen semen as well as perform embryo transfers. Stallion services such as collections, shipping and freezing semen and phantom training are also provided. In addition, we offer foaling out services, including emergency dystocia and neonatal foal care.Further to reproductive services we have a large sports medicine and lameness component to the practice. We have two portable digital radiographs, four digital ultrasounds, a shockwave, an endoscope and three power floats. Two of our veterinarians are also licensed in chiropractic and acupuncture. General equine medicine and preventative plus 24/7 emergency services consume the remainder of our busy caseload. Our patients range from the performance horse to the pleasure pony therefore our caseload is very diverse. Our internship provides an in-depth mentorship that prepares the intern with the skill set and confidence for general equine practice. We have a very collaborative, team-based work ethic and strive to provide a supportive teaching environment. INTERNSHIP SCHEDULE & DUTIES- On call duties are shared 50% between two interns, alternating weekdays and weekends (2 weekdays per week and 2 weekends per month). Interns are required to be on site when on call. An overnight tech is available for evening treatments and monitoring, which allows the intern to focus on case management and appointments.- Interns will rotate every 2 weeks between in clinic/ambulatory cases and reproduction responsibilities.- The hospital and ambulatory component consist of managing hospital cases and in clinic or on farm appointments. Initially the intern will assist veterinarians in appointments and will then move to performing daytime emergencies with a senior veterinarian as their experience and comfort level increases. This typically occurs within 2 months of the internship. A hospital tech available to support the intern and help with treatments. The interns will be supplied with a fully stocked vehicle for appointments and have the technical and communication skills to feel confident to complete appointments on their own. A senior veterinarian will always be available for questions or mentoring as needed.-The reproduction responsibilities consist of working along side our reproduction veterinarians, ultrasounding and palpating mares, developing mare management plans, managing recipient mare herd, and performing diagnostics and treatments. The intern will participate in foaling out mares, neonatal care and developing treatment plans for sick foals. We do not perform any abdominal, orthopedic, or arthroscopic surgeries therefore these cases will be referred to local surgical facilities. No residency options are available at this time.We are looking to fill both a 1 year and a 6-month internship position.
