The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University (ISU) in Ames, Iowa is accepting applications for the position of Executive Director of the Teaching Hospital for Iowa State University’s Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC). The LVMC is a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide specialized care and comprehensive veterinary services for companion and large animals and has board-certified veterinarians in Emergency and Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Soft Tissue and Orthopedic Surgery, Cardiology, Dermatology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology, Theriogenology, and Diagnostic Imaging. The LVMC has over 40 faculty members and serves as the main referral hospital for the State of Iowa and surrounding states. Our faculty, staff, and senior veterinary students work in teams to provide 24-hour, state-of-the-art care to over 20,000 patients each year. The LVMC also provides the foundation for clinical training in professional veterinary medical education (DVM) as well as veterinary internships and residency programs.
The Executive Director will serve a primary administrative position responsible for coordination and oversight of the LVMC and develop strategic planning for the teaching hospital. The Executive Director will report to the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and serve on the College Leadership Cabinet, which provides overall direction for the college. The successful candidate will work closely with other college administrators, academic department administrators, and hospital faculty and staff in establishing and executing sound business and practice strategies to maintain and advance the Hixson-Lied Small Animal and Large Animal teaching hospitals. Supporting the daily hospital operations, the Executive Director will oversee and work with current hospital leadership including an Operations Manager, Business Manager, and various section supervisors. The Executive Director will interface with constituents across campus that are critical to hospital operations and will also serve as a board member of our affiliated small animal emergency and specialty hospital, Iowa Veterinary Specialties (IVS), located in Des Moines, Iowa. The Executive Director will also work with the ISU Foundation to promote fundraising activities that support the LVMC, Department and College.
We seek a dynamic, innovative, service-oriented, and highly effective communicator to continue the clinical and educational mission of the LVMC. The successful candidate should have a strong understanding of the mission and role of a veterinary teaching hospital in a land-grant university, and should possess strong interpersonal, administrative, leadership and business management skills. The Executive Director should be able to engage individuals from diverse backgrounds and have a commitment to support a diverse and inclusive environment. Depending on desires and qualifications, the successful candidate will be appointed to a faculty position in either the Term (Clinical Associate or Full Professor) or Tenure (Associate or Full Professor) track. Expectations for clinical service, teaching or research are not required but may be available if desired.
