Burwash Equine Services is a well established equine general and referral practice located close to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and we are looking to add a second surgeon as the fifth veterinarian to round out our team. The ideal candidate would be passionate about equine sports medicine and lameness diagnostics, proficient in general practice and herd health, and excited to continue building our surgical caseload. Board certified surgeons or surgery residency trained veterinarians are invited to apply.
Our caseload is a mix of both western and English disciplines, and we are proud of our collaborative environment that encourages case discussion to facilitate optimal patient care. We moved into a brand new facility in 2018, consisting of a 12 700 square foot hospital with 3 private exam rooms, a full surgery suite with a client observation area and modern induction and recovery rooms that allow routine rope recovery, and a 12 stall hospital barn with isolation facilities, along with a separate lameness and reproduction center. We are a part of the distributed veterinary learning community of the University of Calgary’s College of Veterinary Medicine, and host fourth year students for clinical rotations.
Our team currently consists of a tight-knit group of 4 veterinarians, including one surgeon, one theriogenologist and 2 experienced general clinicians with special interests in podiatry and dentistry. We also offer mentorship to 2 intern veterinarians and a number of extern students each year. Rounding out our incredible team are a practice manager, 2 registered veterinary technologists, 2 veterinary assistants, 1 barn manager, 1 receptionist, and 1 bookkeeper.
In addition to sharing surgery call, this position would share in the general emergency call rotation as senior backup for the interns. At our practice, the primary on call veterinarian takes over responsibility for hospitalized cases, giving the other veterinarians the opportunity to truly relax when they are not on call. The ideal candidate would have experience in private practice, excel at client communication, and be proficient at invoicing and medical record keeping. The applicant must be motivated to improve the quality of care by being forward-thinking and willing to keep up with advancing technologies. As a practice, we are committed to supporting our veterinarians’ work-life balance and general well-being and are welcoming of innovative and new ideas on how to achieve this for the team as a whole.
Calgary is a major Canadian city of over 1.2 million people, and is located less than an hour from Banff National Park, making it a fantastic place to live if you are interested in outdoor pursuits such as hiking, camping, and skiing.
