Moore Equine is a busy private practice that offers a broad range of experiences for interns. We provide general veterinary medicine services on both an ambulatory and in-hospital basis, as well as a referral center equipped for the full spectrum of surgical and medical care. We have advanced imaging capabilities, including a Hallmarq MRI, and a Nuclear Scintigraphy machine. We have 15 full time veterinarians (as well as 3 part time), and we have board certified specialists in surgery, reproduction, sport medicine and rehab, internal medicine and equine practice (ABVP). We also have veterinarians certified in acupuncture, dentistry and chiropractic treatments. Our case load is 99% equine, with the rare bovine, small ruminant or camelid case. Each year we take five interns, and the internship program is just over a year in length (Mid June to the end of June of the following year).
Philosophy of Internship: The internship aims to provide a broad exposure to equine practice. As Moore Equine is a busy private practice, our interns are the heart of the practice and are vital to providing excellent veterinary care. We aim to provide interns with a nurturing, supportive and challenging environment that will allow them to advance their veterinary skills and build confidence. It is our aim that upon completion of the internship they will be excellent candidates for residency application or very skilled private practitioners.
Internship Duties: Our interns rotate through 5 weekly rotations: 4 day time rotations of surgery, medicine, ambulatory and anaesthesia/repro/in-clinic appointments, as well as a 5th intern on nights. Interns assist the veterinarians in appointments, surgeries and emergencies. Interns are assigned to in hospital cases, with monitoring and care of these patients as a top priority. Interns receive training in anaesthesia, and then during the year rotate through with the technicians for after hours emergencies (one or two weekends in the year). Once trained in anesthesia the focus of the weekly anesthesia rotation is shifted to reproduction/lameness appointments. Within the first few months interns have gained enough experience that they can start taking in day time emergencies with a veterinarian back-up. Interns are responsible for night time treatments of in hospital cases on their night rotation/ night and weekends on call. Stall rounds, weekly journal/topic rounds are aimed to increase interns knowledge base. The internship is affiliated with the University of Calgary and thus interns attend and present rounds, and assist with teaching labs, and have the opportunity to do a research project. Our interns do work long hard hours, but have an exceptional opportunity to be exposed to all facets of equine practice with a high priority placed on mentorship and helping our interns to be the best equine veterinarians they can be. Internships start mid June and extend for a one year period, plus a 1-2 week overlap with the incoming interns.

Application Process: Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent. An externship at Moore Equine will significantly increase your chances of getting an internship as we often would not pick someone that we have not met in person (with exceptions). Applicants must have a strong background and practical experience in horses. International applicants are welcome. We are looking for veterinarians that have a positive attitude, are hard working, intelligent and are team players. To apply please send in a letter of intent, a CV, University transcripts, and three reference letters. These can be sent by email to email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please note that special considerations will be made for exceptional international applicants (those who have not attended an AVMA accredited school nor taken the NAVLE), that have shown themselves to be a great intern candidate during their externship at Moore Equine or through phone/video interviews.
