Thal Equine is the best-equipped and most capable equine hospital between Albuquerque, NM and the Denver metro area. Dr Thal, a lifelong horseman and equine vet since 1993, has been solving tough equine veterinary problems since he started practice. The practice has added and lost staff and veterinarians over the years, but one thing has stayed the same- a commitment to providing thorough veterinary care, exemplary customer service and great communication. Thal Equine is a fully-equipped mobile practice but the emphasis is on providing top-quality hospital and referral services.
The hospital is well-equipped, on a scenic 50 acres outside of town, and includes full surgical suite, gastroscope and other digital endoscopy, DR, digital ultrasound, Equinosis-Q Lameness Locator, thermography and a whole variety of other equipment. We have an on-site training barn, and on-site housing.
Our interns receive a highly clinical, intensive and balanced education in many aspects of equine practice. You will learn a lot about lameness, emergency medicine, managing ill horses in a hospital setting, anesthesia and imaging, mare reproduction, and dentistry. You will get significant exposure to surgery.
A significant part of our practice is referral, and you will communicate with referring vets and sometimes admit referred horses. On the other hand, you will learn to handle many of the common conditions dealt with as an equine vet, with finesse and confidence. There's a strong emphasis on excellent horsemanship making the work easier, safer. more sustainable, and more fun. I like to teach, and I have mentored many young veterinarians.
Historically this has been a larger practice, but we became more lean during the economic downturn. We are expanding again. What this smaller and more intimate practice means is that you will have my focused attention . You will rapidly achieve clinical proficiency and confidence in all the key foundational skills for equine practice. You will also be mentored in the "art of practice", a difficult aspect to learn. This practice emphasizes the use of excellent horsemanship to smoothly and safely administer procedures. An important part of practice is also very clear and concise client communication and excellent client service. You will learn those things working here.
I also developed Horse Side Vet Guide, which is my vision for the enlightened client relationship. See www.HorseSideVetGuide.com for more info . HSVG is the world's most highly rated equine health mobile app, intended for equine caretakers and professionals. I envision a role in which horse people make better decisions that actually drive them toward veterinary medicine.
You can learn more about our practice at www.thalequine.com Be sure to read our testimonials and google reviews.
I expect our interns to dive in and work hard, but I will want you to have a life. When the practice is slower, I will actively encourage you to take time away from the practice. I am open to the idea of a young vet who will want to stay on here if the fit is good. If you have specific questions, be sure to e-mail me at email@example.com
Internship Duties: You will be the first line of care for hospital patients under senior clinician guidance, and will work in providing that care with our technical staff. You will take emergency calls (both in-clinic and ambulatory) from early in your internship but will almost always have a senior clinician to help you either in person or on the phone. You will often admit and do initial assessment on referred colic and other emergencies and communicate your findings to senior clinician.
During the first 8 weeks of your internship you will work by my side and I will teach you as much as I can. After 8 weeks, you will begin seeing your own patients . As you progress in your internship, you will naturally do more and more yourself. But throughout, I will personally see to it that you continue to develop as a clinician.
Applicants should be experienced and confident horse handlers. Preference will be given to applicants who have shown that they are hard-working, have initiative, and are really interested in equine private practice. Please send application with letter of intent and resume to Thal Equine Internship at firstname.lastname@example.org . 3 letters of recommendation will be required.
