Texas Equine Hospital is seeking 4 new Veterinary graduates for a one year equine hospital internship.
Internship duties include assisting specialists with hospitalized patients, appointments, emergencies, and after hours care to hospitalized patients as needed. We have 4 rotations which each intern rotates through: Medicine/ICU, Dr. Honnas’s Surgery Service, Dr. Canada’s Surgery Service and Emergency night/ ICU coverage. Both Surgery Services will include radiology, endoscopy and ultrasonography. The Emergency night/ICU is spent taking in all Emergencies and taking care of hospital cases with the primary staff doctors on duty. The Medicine/ICU day rotation is spent in the medicine service department. When time allows, ambulatory cases will also be included in this internship.
We believe our internship provides an excellent opportunity for new graduates to become familiar with a busy referral practice and participate in all phases of the day-to-day operation of the hospital. We believe that hands on experience is extremely important for our interns to become successful, confident, and competent practitioners that are well prepared for private practice or specialty residency training.
We have two boarded surgeons, two associates, 3 intern Doctors, 15 technicians, 4 office staff, and 2 barn staff. The array of patients we see is varied with a higher proportion of performance horses, race horses, western eventing horses and then a mix of other breeds and disciplines. The hospital has a fully equipped surgical suite, three recovery rooms, two imaging rooms, five exam rooms, pharmacy, lab, reception area, two apartments, and a conference/surgery viewing room. A covered 60 x 120 asphalt area is used for lameness evaluations. Adjacent to the main building is a 12 stall barn with 1 exam room plus 30 outdoor covered stalls. There is also a climate controlled barn that has four ICU stalls and two Isolation stalls. A new addition is a 16 stall barn for Mares and foals. A separate building houses a climate controlled farrier shop.
Our Internships are for one year and will run from June 1, 2021 through following year of June 3, 2022.
