Equine Services is seeking motivated interns who are excited to experience a well rounded internship experience that includes ambulatory, hospital, surgical and reproductive experience in a small hospital setting that empowers our interns to learn to think and practice independently. We strive to practice high quality veterinary medicine with an emphasis excellent client and patient care.
Philosophy of Internship: To provide our interns with an opportunity to acquire new skills, fine tune established skills, and further their knowledge in various aspects of equine practice to help them become well rounded, highly competitive veterinarians whether they continue into a residency program or enter into ambulatory practice.
Internship Duties: For the first several months of the internship, our interns’ main responsibility is front-line hospital patient care, as we assess your skills and provide additional training and proctoring to prepare you for more independent activities. You will provide daily examinations, treatments, attend foal-outs, and maintain medical records. You will also assist our practitioners with radiology, anesthesiology, surgery, lameness, reproduction, laser, MRIs, nuclear scans, shockwave, pre-purchase exams, video endoscopy/gastroscopy, ambulatory medical examinations, referral cases, emergency cases, and laboratory testing. As your skills develop, you will begin to handle ambulatory calls and procedures on an increasingly independent basis. Throughout your internship (within the scope of your competence and skills), you will share on-call and holiday coverage. You will have the opportunity to attend a host of premier equine events, including racing at Keenland and Churchill Downs, the Kentucky State Fair and World’s Championship Horse Show (Saddlebreds, Roadsters, and Hackney Ponies), Regional Championships for Arabians, Eventing, Hunter Ponies, and smaller shows, exhibitions, and county fairs of all descriptions.
