The United States Army Public Health Activity – San Diego is seeking a qualified veterinarian for a full time civilian General Services (GS) position in San Diego, California.
Performs as an accredited and licensed veterinarian. The knowledge and skills required and the services performed are associated with the prevention of human illness from food or animal sources, the wholesomeness and quality of subsistence, and the health and welfare of animals. Serves as a veterinarian directing and supervising military food safety and quality assurance programs to include personnel, facilities, and equipment, routine care, surgery, examinations, and laboratory evaluations for privately owned animals; treats government-owned animals; and provides client education concerning pet animals. Diagnoses conditions and diseases of public health and zoonotic concern. Organizes and conducts sanitary audits and inspections, recognizes sanitary deficiencies, and determines sanitary compliance with regulatory requirements of commercial and government facilities that produce, process, prepare, manufacture, store, or otherwise handle subsistence. Provides technical expertise and advice concerning food safety and quality assurance issues to military acquisition, supply, and retail activities. Identifies and provides technical information concerning microbiological, chemical, and physical deterioration of subsistence. Interfaces with DoD, Federal, State, and local inspection authorities and regulatory health agencies concerning food safety and quality assurance matters. Observes, records, and reports on subsistence problems that may have public health significance. Develops/conducts food safety and quality assurance training to support local unit mission requirements.
