The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Office of Research, Division of Applied Veterinary Research is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Veterinary Medical Officer. The Division of Applied Veterinary Research conducts applied and basic research using animals and animal systems in support of current and evolving regulatory issues. The Division provides research solutions to issues of animal health, food safety of animal derived products, and other animal industry associated technologies. This position will be filled through FDA’s Staff Fellowship program. The appointment is up to 2 years with opportunity for renewal.
As a Veterinary Medical Officer, you will assist the Attending Animal Care Veterinarian (AV) and the Clinical Veterinarian (CV), conducting research using the latest in veterinary medicine and laboratory techniques, and provide animal surgical support as required by other researchers. You will assist the Principal Investigators and research and animal care staff in the proper conduct of procedures including, but not limited to, protocol development, study initiation, termination, reporting aspects, technical procedures, surgical procedures, postoperative care, and the use of anesthetics and analgesics. You will ensure the humane handling, husbandry, and veterinary medical care of animals used by research programs by adhering to and enforcing applicable legislation and policies and perform analytical procedures using appropriate models and laboratory apparatuses based on research requirements. You will recommend new laboratory equipment based on program requirements, schedules, demonstrations, and participate in procurement requests. You will keep and maintain laboratory records and provide guidance and train technical support personnel regarding laboratory procedures, techniques, and equipment maintenance and repair.
Applicants must have research experience with large and small animals. Research experience with aquatic animals is desirable. Applicants must also be able to operate analytical instruments (e.g., spectrometers, thermocyclers, flow cytometers, bioanalytical devices, microtiter plates readers, chromatographs) and prioritize research goals, prepare protocols, and write Standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Applicants must possess a current, valid veterinary license from one of the 50 U.S. states that allows for practice of veterinary medicine and be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident.
The position is located in Laurel, Maryland and is available immediately. The position can be filled at the GS-11 or GS-12 equivalent level based on experience and education. The salary range for the GS-11 equivalent level is $68,036 to $88,450 and for the GS-12 is from $81,548 to $106,012.
