The Ballarat Veterinary Practice Equine clinic is an 11-vet practice based on the edge of the Ballarat Turf Club Racing and Training Centre where 350 horses are trained and 25 race meetings a year are held. There is also a large Standardbred population and 40 meetings per year are held at the local harness track. The clinic provides a hospital based surgical and imaging referral service and is the base for the ambulatory services provided to the racetrack and general equine clients in the surrounding district. The hospital also has an internship program with three interns currently employed. The practice has regular visits to neighboring racing regions including Stawell, Horsham and Warrnambool.
There are two positions available for a member of the racetrack and ambulatory team that will provide service to all breeds of horses from Thoroughbreds, Standardbreds and sport horses through to all types of pleasure horses and ponies in the district. As well as racing stable work, typical general practice equine work is also undertaken including lameness assessment, dentistry, lacerations, reproductive work including ultrasound scanning, field colic assessment and all general veterinary equine work. Due to the size of the practice and level of experience there is strong support for our ambulatory veterinarians at all times.
The practice has three specialist surgeons available for consultation and assistance with referral of cases. The clinic has full surgical facilities, ultrasound, computed and digital radiography, endoscopy, scintigraphy and standing MRI facilities and the ability to house up to 28 horses.
The successful applicant should be a graduate with at least two years’ experience. Weekend after hours responsibility is shared equally between members of the ambulatory team with the normal rotation being one weekend every four weeks. Duties will involve all ambulatory services as outlined above and also attending both thoroughbred and harness race meetings as the official veterinarian.
A company vehicle and phone are provided with this position. Remuneration is dependent on experience but all award benefits are available and provided for. Other benefits include AVA membership and an annual Continuing Education stipend of $2,000 per annum.
