We are looking for a 2nd Intern... Position is open immediately. We have had a very busy year and have decided to expand our internship program this year.
Durango Equine is located in the Southwest corner of the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. We have a large farm and clinic as well as an active ambulatory practice. We are currently a four-doctor practice and hope to expand to a five-doctor practice. Dr. Kloppe is board certified in equine reproduction which he focuses on exclusively during the breeding season, mid-February through early July. Dr. Kloppe breeds over 100 mares at the clinic with fresh and frozen semen, and also performs multiple embryo transfers. Several breeding stallions stand at the clinic. We foal-out dozens of mares at the clinic and perform a lot of routine & emergency neonatal work on the farm and in the clinic.
We also perform a lot of general equine medicine, lameness, and surgery with a specialty in dentistry. We have a large base of regular clientele, with whom we maintain a very strong relationship, and our patients make up a variety of equine breeds and disciplines. Durango Equine has two digital ultrasound machines, three Powerfloats, a Mini-Makita, and two dental dremels. We have a Digital Radiograph machine and a video endoscope for upper airway exams. We perform elective surgeries including cryptorchid castration, hernia repair, enucleation, cryosurgery, urethral extensions, colpotomies, etc. We do not perform orthopedic, abdominal, or arthroscopic surgeries. Dr. Loomer offers chiropractic therapy.
Durango Equine has offered an internship for over 15 years. The internship position can have a primary reproductive focus in the spring if the intern is interested in this field. Our internship prepares the intern for a therio residency or general equine practice. This would include ultrasounds, mare & stallion breeding soundness exams, stallion collection, and embryo retrievals. The intern would practice general equine ambulatory medicine the rest of the year. Emergency duty is rotated with another local equine practice. The intern would initially be on emergency duty with another doctor, and then would rotate with all the other doctors as his/her comfort level increases. We offer housing for the intern. Details of salary and other benefits for the internship are listed on the AAEP website under "Avenues".
